Hotel Peralada occupies a working wine estate in Catalonia's Alt Empordà, where an ivy-covered 14th-century castle anchors 130 hectares of vineyards between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava coast. The 64-room hotel sits beside its own golf course and a spa built entirely around vinotherapy, its treatment rooms drawing on grape-seed oils and red-wine wraps from the surrounding vines. Days move between the Jordi Soler Peix-designed course, threaded through stone pine and small lakes, and the Michelin-starred restaurant inside the castle itself, where the Mateu family — founders of the automaker Hispano Suiza — began reviving the estate's monastic winemaking tradition in 1923. A private casino, a Gothic cloister, and a summer music festival round out a property that functions as much as a cultural compound as a resort.

On Property
Spring and Fall
April through June and September into October bring the Empordà's mildest weather and calmest greens. Summer is hot and draws holiday crowds to the coast; winter rounds are quieter and still playable, but more exposed to the Tramontana wind.
The Tramontana, the fierce north wind that funnels down from the Pyrenees, can turn a mild round into a genuine test with little warning — check with the pro shop before teeing off if it's blowing.
Features &
Amenities
Beyond the golf course, Hotel Peralada operates as a working wine estate — one where the castle, the cellar, and the fairways all share the same 130 hectares.

Golf Woven Through the Vineyard
Designed by Jordi Soler Peix and opened in 1993, Peralada's 18-hole, par-71 course runs through stone pine, olive trees, and small lakes on the estate's own land. The closing hole tees off from an island in open water. A nine-hole, par-3 academy course and a golf school round out the practice grounds, and low-season rounds often go off with the fairways nearly empty.

Wine Therapy, Literally
The Wine Spa devotes its treatment rooms to vinotherapy — massages with grape-seed oil, facials finished in grape concentrate, and a warming red-wine body wrap — alongside a sauna, a wine-infused jacuzzi, and an arched, colonnaded pool set into the estate's old stone outbuildings. Guests can book a private hour in the water area before or after treatments.

A Working Wine Estate
The ivy-wrapped 14th-century castle at the center of the property has anchored winemaking here since Carmelite monks first pressed grapes on the site; the Mateu family, founders of the automaker Hispano Suiza, revived the tradition in 1923. Today the estate farms 130 hectares of vines across five sites, and its Gran Claustro cava has been poured at royal weddings.
