Desert golf amid the Catalina Mountain foothills

About

Ventana Canyon Club and Lodge

Ventana Canyon Club and Lodge is a luxury desert retreat nestled in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains outside Tucson. The Tom Fazio-designed courses wind through dramatic Sonoran Desert terrain with saguaro-studded fairways and panoramic mountain views.

  • Tom Fazio designed both the Mountain and Canyon courses as complementary 18-hole layouts — together they represent 36 holes of sustained Sonoran Desert architecture with zero filler
  • The Mountain Course's third hole, 'Hole in the Wall,' is one of the most recognizable short par 3s in American golf
  • Hiking trails from the property access the Pusch Ridge Wilderness, putting true backcountry Sonoran Desert within reach without a car
  • The setting inside a private canyon at the base of the Santa Catalinas means the resort feels genuinely removed from Tucson's sprawl
  • Sunset views from the canyon-facing suites and terraces track the light across multiple ridgelines — the kind of vista usually reserved for a trail, not a resort room

Signature Hole

Mountain Course · 3 (Par 3)

The 107-yard 'Hole in the Wall' drops from a tee so small it barely holds a foursome, carrying a cactus-filled canyon to a tiny green wedged among boulders in the Santa Catalina foothills. One of the most photographed holes west of the Mississippi, it has surrendered several aces when errant shots ricochet off the surrounding rock walls.

Best Time to Visit

October - April

Tucson's desert winters are reliably mild with temperatures in the 60s and 70s — the saguaro-and-boulder landscape looks its sharpest against clear blue sky, and the Mountain Course's canyon holes play without the monsoon moisture of summer.

LXV Insider

Tee time on the Mountain Course's third hole — 'Hole in the Wall' — runs fastest in the early morning when the Santa Catalinas are backlit and the Sonoran Desert stretches south into Mexico. The tee box fits barely four players; have your shot picked before you step up. Book the Loews resort spa for a late afternoon saguaro-scrub treatment after the round while your legs are still warm.

Features &
Amenities

Ventana Canyon Club and Lodge occupies 600 acres in the Santa Catalina foothills, with 50 private suites, two Tom Fazio-designed championship courses, and an AAA Four Diamond rating held continuously since 1997.

Two Tom Fazio Championship Courses

The Mountain Course and Canyon Course each run 18 holes through the Sonoran Desert foothills, incorporating elevation changes, arroyos, and natural rock formations that Fazio integrated rather than cleared. The Canyon Course in particular routes through a dramatic desert wash, demanding precise shot placement on several par-3 holes where the carry crosses open terrain.

Catalina Dining Room and Bar

The Catalina Dining Room serves sustainably sourced seafood, locally grown produce, and regional meats with an eclectic wine list that has earned consistent recognition. Open to guests for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the room offers direct views across the Santa Catalina foothills — a natural framing that shifts dramatically at sunset. The Ventana Bar and Grill operates as a more relaxed complement, open daily for dinner and Friday through Sunday for lunch.

Racquet Sports, Pools, and Spa

The property maintains dedicated tennis and pickleball courts alongside two resort pools, a steam room, sauna, whirlpool, and a full fitness center. The Day Spa at The Lodge offers massage, body treatments, and nail services, positioned as a quieter complement to the outdoor sports program rather than a destination facility in its own right.
