A boardwalk leads to tees set within a dam before this dogleg-left par-5 plays along the water's edge — the kidney-shaped green is bunkered right with the dam continuing all the way up the left and around the back, requiring precise carry and a committed approach.

Book a tee time in the morning when the Stellenbosch light is low across the Blaauwklippen River and the Hottentots-Holland Mountains are sharp behind the 13th's dam — the afternoon can bring Cape Doctor wind that adds two or three clubs on approach. De Zalze Lodge sits on the first fairway of the Peter Matkovich-designed De Zalze Golf Course within a 300-hectare Winelands estate in Stellenbosch, where accommodation, championship golf, and the Kleine Zalze wine program occupy the same grounds.
Peter Matkovich Championship Golf
The 18-hole De Zalze Golf Course was designed by Peter Matkovich and stretches 6,385 meters through Stellenbosch's vineyard and mountain landscape. The lodge's suites face the first fairway directly, giving guests immediate course access without a drive or shuttle. Lievens Restaurant at the clubhouse offers indoor and outdoor seating with panoramic mountain and fairway views.
Kleine Zalze Wine Program
Kleine Zalze has produced wine on this estate since 1695, making it one of the oldest continuous wine operations in the Cape Winelands. Guided tastings led by the estate's wine advisors cover the full portfolio in a setting beneath mature oaks in summer or indoors in winter, and the program pairs naturally with the lodge's breakfast and dining arrangements.
Vineyard and Mountain Setting
The lodge's infinity pool overlooks the golf course, vineyards, and the Stellenbosch Mountain range beyond, providing a landscape orientation that is difficult to replicate in the region. Approximately 34 km west; 30-40 minutes by car depending on traffic on the N2. The only practical commercial arrival point for international and domestic guests.
