The Preserve Sporting Club & Resort
Richmond, RI, United StatesNew England's premier sporting club and golf retreat
The Preserve Sporting Club & Resort
The Preserve Sporting Club & Resort is an exclusive 3,500-acre retreat in the woodlands of southern Rhode Island, recognized by Forbes as 'The Finest Sporting Club in America.' With an award-winning par-3 golf course, world-class sporting clays, unique dining experiences including a Hobbit House and Safari Tent, and the OH! Spa, it offers a complete outdoor sporting lifestyle.
- Robert McNeil's 18-hole all-par-3 Mountain Course is an American Golf Architects Association Design Excellence Award winner — elevation changes and wooded terrain make it genuinely challenging rather than merely short
- Sporting clays course, archery range, and fly fishing position The Preserve as a multi-discipline sporting estate in the New England tradition, not simply a golf destination
- OH! Spa and glamping options extend the property's appeal to guests who prefer the experience of wilderness proximity without sacrificing comfort
- Gated private community setting in Richmond, Rhode Island gives the property an exclusivity that contrasts with the state's more accessible public offerings
- GEO-certified golf ethos — ecological certification signals that the land management philosophy treats the surrounding woodland as an amenity, not just a backdrop
The Course
- The Preserve Golf Course — 18 holes, par 54, designed by Robert McNeil
The Preserve Golf Course · 1st (Par 3)
The opening hole plays 147 yards from the highest point on the property, requiring a drop shot down to a softly contoured green that rolls from the lower left to the upper right half, set against a sharp wooded slope. It immediately establishes the course's design premise: elevation change as the primary defense.

On Property
May - October
Southern Rhode Island's temperate season delivers comfortable playing conditions through summer and fall foliage in September and October that transforms the surrounding woodland into a dramatic backdrop.
The Mountain Course plays its full 18 holes as a par-3 layout, which reads deceptively short on paper — the first hole drops from the highest point on the property into a tilted green, and the elevation changes throughout are severe enough to require a full bag. Pair a morning round with an afternoon sporting clays session for the most complete expression of what the Preserve actually offers.
